Bernie to live stream head shave for charity
A mum of two, who has been suffering with cancer for 14 years, is shaving her head to help raise money for charity – and is doing it live on social media.
(Please note Bernie’s head shave took place on 30 April but donations can still be made.)
Bernie Webbe, of Basford, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer – ACC (adenoid cystic carcinoma) – in 2006, and has since had six further diagnoses.
In 2017 the ACC had spread to Bernie’s head, neck and lungs and the 44-year-old was told the cancer was terminal.
Over the years Bernie has also had to undergo major surgery and permanent facial disfigurement and had countless hospital appointments.
As a thank you to all doctors, nurses and staff at Royal Stoke University Hospital, Bernie will shave her head live via a Facebook live stream on Thursday 30 April at 8:05pm.
“As a thank you for all the support I’ve had over the last 14 years from the Royal Stoke University hospital, I am doing a head shave to raise money for the UHNM Charity,” says Bernie.
“Everyone at the hospital has been really helpful to me and I can’t thank them enough. The charity do amazing things and I just want to do what I can.”
UHNM is a registered charity which provides funds to enable University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust to purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment and to enhance and improve patient experience and comfort at County Hospital in Stafford and Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent.
Bernie, who works as a community enterprise officer at charity CAFAG (Chell Area Family Action Group), has also received treatment at Harefield Hospital in North-West London.
She adds: “I am able to get each lung tumour treated with ablation surgery in London, but new tumours will keep growing. I’ve just this month been told I’ve got three more lung tumours and possibly a possible tumour on my liver – but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. I am waiting for more treatment now.
“It is no fun living with cancer, but I have great support around me. My family and friends are all behind me and I thank each and every one of them for their help and support.
“My work colleagues are also very supportive and everyone helps you to just keep going.”
Bernie’s charity head shave took place on Thursday 30 April.
