One Man Two Guvnors at the New Vic
I don’t think there are enough stars to give this play justice – One Man Two Guvnors at the New Vic Theatre is more than just a comedy – it’s an experience which transports you on a roller coaster journey during 1960s Brighton.

Live music welcomes the audience as they enter the theatre in the round, which instantly creates a warm upbeat atmosphere before the cleverly crafted chaos unfolds.
All-time New Vic favourite Michael Hugo gives an outstanding performance as Henshall when doing his best to please two guvnors at the same time.
The rapport Hugo has – not just with fellow cast members – who are all incredible in their own performances – but with the audience is something quite special. You cannot wait to see where Hugo takes Henshall next and you can only but howl with laughter when his character has an argument with himself in a scene which is more than flawless.
When 86-year-old Alfie (played by Nick Haverson) enters the stage ready for dinner service at the hotel – where Henshall’s guvnors have taken up residence – the audience once more are in an uproar which bellows throughout the theatre as he stumbles his away around in true style.
The mastery during these scenes is further enhanced by a stage setting which in itself adapts from scene to scene just as seamless as the cast do.
Lucinda Freeburn is superb as Rachel Crabbe when bringing an added intrigue into the story with Gareth Cooper as Stanley Stubbers equally as captivating.
Dolly’s presence is perfectly delivered by Jessica Dyas along with Thomas Cotran as Alan Dangle, whilst the vocals from Alyce Liburd, are without a doubt as remarkable as her performance as character Pauline Clench.
The expert direction of Conrad Nelson enables a stellar cast, who all work beautifully together, to create an unforgettable experience where audience members feel part of the story from start to finish. (Watch out if you’re on the front row…)
There’s laughter, there’s live music and there’s something magical about this staging of Richard Bean’s comedy which you’ll remember all for the right reasons and want to experience more of.
As mentioned at the beginning of this review – there just aren’t enough stars to say how good this really is – but for now its a huge 5 Stars here – with triple the gold….simply wonderful…
