National Road Safety Campaign

Road-Safety-Staffordshire

Drivers are being reminded about the importance of safe driving as part of a national campaign.

Project EDWARD ‘Every Day Without A Road Death’ aims to promote road safety and will run from 13 to 17 September.

The initiative is being backed by the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership who are responsible for promoting road safety in the county and city of Stoke-on-Trent. Over the five days, a social media campaign will offer drivers tips on keeping themselves and others safe while on the roads.

As part of the national campaign, three electric cars will make their way across the country, with drivers pitting their skills against each other to deliver the most economical and environmental journey. Drivers will also showcase the best examples of safe road planning and driving.

The campaign also coincides with National Safe Speeds Day on Wednesday 15 September, when police forces will be running a 24 hour operation to encourage compliance with speed limits.

David Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council and joint chair of the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership  said: “Since the partnership was created 20 years ago, we have seen huge improvements in road safety across the county which is brilliant news and testament to the hard work of the partnership. This is an important campaign that helps remind drivers of the importance of safe driving and how by all taking extra care on the roads we can help reduce the number of collisions and keep all road users safe.”

Cllr Daniel Jellyman, cabinet member for regeneration, infrastructure and heritage, said: “Our roads continue to be amongst the safest in the country which is something we’re incredibly proud of. We’ve been able to do this through a mix of activities including, education, road engineering, enforcement and awareness raising.  I would urge people to watch out for the campaign on social media and share the posts to help make our roads even safer.”

Project EDWARD is backed by government, the emergency services, highways agencies, road safety organisations and businesses. The long-term objective of the campaign is to have a road traffic system free from death and serious injury.
