Museum and Art Gallery shortlisted for national Award
The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery has been shortlisted for the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award.
Charity Kids in Museums has run a prestigious annual award for 16 years, recognising the most family friendly heritage sites in the UK. It is the only museum award to be judged by families.
From late March to early June, families across the UK voted for their favourite heritage attraction on the Kids in Museums website. A panel of museum experts then whittled down hundreds of nominations to a shortlist of 16 heritage attractions.
The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery is vying against three other museums in the Best Medium Museum Category.
Cllr Lorraine Beardmore, cabinet member for culture, leisure and public health said: “We are so excited to hear that The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery has been nominated in the Best Medium Museum category as part of the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award. Our museum is one of the pillar stones of culture for children and families of Stoke-on-Trent to learn about and enjoy local history. We have fantastic family events and activities all year round and so it’s wonderful to have the hard work of the museums team recognised in this way.”
Families are at the heart of The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery. The museum has an extensive family offer including family holiday craft activities, Mindful Museum sessions for under 8 years, regular free events for families and exhibitions specially designed for families. Many galleries have dedicated child and family-friendly areas to encourage interaction.
The museum also has a series of Family Activity Packs and trails based on the Ozzy Owl mascot, who explores the different galleries throughout the museum. There is a pack for different galleries and for family friendly exhibition, Commonwealth Connections. The packs are designed for children to enjoy within the space and also at home and includes a specially designed booklet containing an I Spy trail, colouring sheets and puzzles. Families can email the museum photographs of their finished activities which can then feature in our online gallery.
Over the summer holidays, the museum will be visited by undercover family judges who will assess the shortlisted museums against the Kids in Museums Manifesto. Their experiences will decide a winner for each award category and an overall winner of the Family Friendly Museum Award 2022. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in October.
