TV Expert and New Exhibition at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery
An illustrated talk by a TV expert and a brand NEW exhibition is taking place at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.
Star of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and Bargain Hunt Eric Knowles presents a free, illustrated talk celebrating The Flowering of British Ceramics on Saturday 21 May 2022, 2.00pm.
Eric speaks about one of his favourite subjects, tube-lined designs in the Art Nouveau style on pottery and tiles, famously produced in the Potteries by Moorcroft, Minton and other iconic factories- now collected and prized all over the world. Eric Knowles is well known in the Potteries as an expert on ceramics and as a great advocate of the remarkable skills of the people of Stoke-on-Trent. He is a long-standing supporter and visitor at the City’s Museums. Eric speaks about his addiction to pots and his experiences as a TV antiques expert.
The talk is presented by the Northern Ceramics Society in partnership with the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery and the renowned ceramics curators and staff. The annual event- the Godden Lecture- is presented by the NCS in tribute to the well-known antiques dealer and author on ceramics subjects Geoffrey Godden, whose generosity ensures that the series of talks by leading authorities is open to all, free of charge.
Eric Knowles said: “I am both delighted and honoured to be asked to give the Godden lecture, and it allows me to pay homage to a long-time, friend, mentor and fellow Pot-O-Holic”.
Cllr Lorraine Beardmore, cabinet member for culture, leisure and public health said: “We are delighted to welcome Eric Knowles to The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery for The Flowering of British Ceramics. The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery is one of the most culturally rich venues the city has to offer and I couldn’t think of a better place to host such an event. On the same day, we will also be launching our brand new exhibition The Flowering of British Ceramics, which celebrates a high-quality range of ceramics with innovative floral designs and runs until 4 September.”
The event also marks the launch of the exhibition The Flowering of British Ceramics. The inspiration of flowers and floral arts in the design, decoration and production of vast quantities of ceramics made in the Staffordshire Potteries and sold world-wide is celebrated. From vases to wine coolers, wares for tea and table to presentation pieces, prized apprentice plates to grand exhibits for trade shows, a full range of ceramics has been selected as testimony to British ceramic design and manufacturing industry.
