Staffs Games Graduates top the list of the UK’s most talented
Staffordshire University graduates have scooped more accolades than any other institutions in a list recognising the UK’s outstanding computer games talent.
TIGA, the trade association representing the UK’s video games industry, revealed 77 outstanding graduates, post-graduates and learners in games. Each of the students was nominated by their university or college for the prestigious award ‘TIGA Graduate of the Year’.
Judges from the TIGA Education Committee then reviewed the submissions and evidence of the students’ work.
Staffordshire University’s talented graduates achieved 19 accolades in total, awarded in the categories of Artist, Computer Games Technology, Designer;, Programmer and Production/Enterprise.
TIGA CEO Dr Richard Wilson OBE, said: “TIGA aims to promote and salute excellence in education. Each graduate and learner has demonstrated excellent work and has the potential for a successful career in the video games industry. TIGA would also like to commend all of our TIGA accredited courses for delivering excellence in education and nominating such talented students for these TIGA accolades.”
Professor Chris Headleand, Head of Department for Games Design and Technology, said: “This is fantastic news, coming as it does during our Summer Awards week, and helps confirm Staffordshire University’s reputation as the number one institution for computer games. This also means our graduates stand a good chance of being included in the category shortlists for the TIGA UK Games Education Awards which will be announced shortly.”
In 2021 Staffordshire University was named winner of the Excellence in University/Industry Collaboration by TIGA. This recognised the Games and Visual Effects Summer Showcase, an online event, which gave students the opportunity to engage directly with industry experts during the pandemic.
Dean of the Faculty of Computing Technologies and Arts Dr Julie King added: “We are immensely proud of our talented graduates and to get TIGA recognition such as this is a huge feather in their cap and will help them as they start out on careers in the industry.” Our lecturers can also take pride in the fact that so many of our students have gained the title ‘TIGA Graduate of the Year’ as it is also a testament to the high quality learning and teaching on their course.”
