Celebration of Local Heroes in Newcastle-under-Lyme
Community heroes are to be honoured for the first time in a local awards scheme.
Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council has launched the inaugural “Newcastle Heroes”
awards, with a ceremony to take place at the Mayor’s Charity Ball at the end of March.
Categories for the awards include: Community Champion, Young Hero and Lifetime Achievement.
Simon Tagg, Leader of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, said: “Our communities
are the bedrock of this borough and they in turn rely on the people within them who give
their time, energy and enthusiasm to make a difference to the lives of those around them. We want to recognise those people, thank them and publicise their stories to show others how it’s possible for big things to grow from small beginnings.
The three categories are:
Community Champion
The Community Champion Award is an opportunity to say thank you to someone who has
done something special for their local community and who goes above and beyond to
support the borough. The Community Champion will be someone who has tirelessly supported a local cause and engages with others to help their local area flourish.
Young Hero
The Young Hero award is open to nominations for young residents between the ages of 14-
21. This person will have made a significant contribution to their community, perhaps through
volunteering, environmental projects or any other work.
Lifetime Achievement
The Lifetime Achievement award recognises and celebrates a resident who has persistently
and tirelessly championed a cause or community project which has had long lasting and
sustainable impact on the borough. We value those who use their experience, and passion
for progress and improvement to benefit the borough in the long-term.
The inaugural awards are being launched as part of the year-long celebrations of the 850th anniversary of Newcastle-under-Lyme’s incorporation as a borough.
Simon Tagg added: “Through the centuries, the success of this borough has rested very
much on the spirit, skill and determination of its residents. We still have those qualities in abundance today and it’s important that we mark their achievements publicly.”
Applications can be made online , by e-mailing Susan.Davies@newcastle-staffs.gov.uk or
