Alice in Wonderland Review
It wouldn’t be Christmas without a festive visit to the New Vic Theatre and this year’s winter production is as magical as ever.
Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland is full of surprises in this perfectly adapted play by Theresa Heskins.
Alice arrives in the theatre in the round by travelling in a narrow boat along a canal with her parents and surrounded by a skyline of smoking pot banks – a local touch which is genius.
It’s not long before Alice’s journey starts when following The Great Blanco (Peter Watts) into a theatre and then falling through a trap door where she goes on to meet all manner of characters in the fabulous wonderland.
Peter Watts switches to the White Rabbit in true style and is superb all the way through, duly complimented by the curious Alice played by Eleanor Fransch.
This adaptation is full of colourful characters including the Mad Hatter and the mischievous Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.
A scene between the Tweedle’s is undoubtedly a highlight along with the presence of the Cheshire Cat. A battle of chess adds to the excitement as Alice’s travels go on before returning home to her parents.
Purvi Parmar (main image) is exceptional as the Red Queen along with Victoria Brazier as the White Queen, whilst Danielle Bird is as vibrant as ever when playing the Mad Hatter – a part which will be taken over by New Vic legend Michael Hugo from 21 December.
Alice in Wonderland is a tale we all know and love, a tale to remember and to cherish… Alice in Wonderland at the New Vic Theatre is a production full of colourful costumes, fabulous special effects, dancing, singing, a stellar cast and a production full of magic which we will not forget.
Christmas has arrived – thank you one again New Vic!
