The Three Musketeers Review
The Three Musketeers is a tale of friendship and adventure.
A tale to be shared and enjoyed by all in the theatre in the round at the New Vic – Review by Sonya Farrall.
The motto ‘All for One and One for All’ is spoken often throughout the play, which begins with an ambitious and eager d’Artagnan arriving in Paris with the aim to impress the Musketeers and join them in their work.
After a test run and sword fight with Athos, Porthos and Aramis, d’Artagnan is given the opportunity to prove himself further, but when on duty in the Royal gardens his naivety leads him into a spot of bother when tricked by the mischievous Milady, who has been recruited by the Cardinal to plot against the Crown.
Sword fights are aplenty with each one carefully crafted and acted out in true style and bursting with energy.
The audience is also treated to genius slow motion scenes as battles continue, plus ‘rewind’ moments as the characters work to solve the mystery of the missing Royal jewellery.
Emma Symmonds is a delight to watch as the Queen and is superbly accompanied by her King, played by the excellent Gareth Cassidy – who never disappoints and adds humour with every turn.
A nice touch was the masquerade ball where audience participation was welcomed and colourful creative costumes graced the stage.
Hadley Smith (Porthos), Thomas Dennis (Aramis), Louis J Rhone (Athos) and Lemar Moller (d’Artagnan) were all equally impressive – whether in sword fights or when prompting laughter – and Perry Moore was convincing as the Cardinal.
The Three Musketeers is a festive treat for all with action, humour and a wonderful cast and the meaning behind the motto ‘All for One and One for All’ shines throughout.
