Drama projects with the New Vic Theatre open to young people
The New Vic’s Education team are inviting young people into the world of classic story – The Secret Garden – for drama projects, including the return of their popular ‘Play In A Week’, as they pay homage much-loved children’s author Frances Hodgson Burnett.
The Real Secret Garden from – Monday 29 July to Friday 2 August – is this year’s ‘Play In a Week’.
During the five days, participants aged 10 to 15 will join new characters to discover the secrets of the garden from 10.00am to 4pm each day (until 6pm on the Friday) to learn about the play, read-through the script, be cast in a part, and rehearse with fellow cast members, leading up to a performance for family and friends on Friday 2 August at 5.00pm.
Keeping the Garden’s Secrets on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 August from 1oam to 3pm is a creative couple of days for younger children aged five to nine, where they are invited to create their own secret garden through crafts and drama.
Amy Fletcher, New Vic Youth Theatre Director and Education Practitioner, and writer of The Real Secret Garden, said: “This year’s ‘Play in a Week’, The Real Secret Garden, is a new story inspired by the real-life inspiration for the famous tale.
“During the project the young people will work in a similar way to a professional theatre company but in a much shorter space of time. There are so many skills to be learnt – following direction, learning lines, working as part of an ensemble, critical thinking, creative problem solving, time management, confidence building and more.
“Whether participants are new to performing or seasoned pros there will be something for everyone. The week is a great challenge, and the sense of achievement is rewarding.
“Both projects are inspired by The Secret Garden, which is a wonderfully uplifting tale. It shows us the joys of playing outside, experiencing nature, planting seeds and the power of friendship.
“It taps into the imaginations of all ages with its sense of mystery. For generations children have enjoyed this adventure, passing the story to the next generation, and I hope this project continues that legacy.”
