Pretty Woman at The Regent – Review
A new musical on tour always brings great excitement to theatre loving Stoke as west-end hit Pretty Woman finally graces the Regent theatre – review by Mel Osborne.
Based on the film of the same name with book by Garry Marshall & J.F.Lawton and directed by Jerry Mitchell – the musical version breathes new life into a much loved story.
Pretty woman is a classic fairytale in modern times, well the eighties anyway. In 1989 everything was big; hair, shoulders and especially business. Set in Hollywood where everyone goes with a dream, Vivian and her friend Kit are trying to make ends meet working on the streets. Vivian meets business tycoon Edward who whisks her off to the Beverley Wilshire for a ‘business arrangement’.
Films like Pretty woman probably wouldn’t be written today, if anything it has previously been critiqued for glamourising street work. However, what is notable about this new production is that subtle changes have been made without compromising the storyline.
It is as if the story had its very own make over. This production sparkles from beginning to end. It is pleasing to see a new musical score have been written for the production as opposed to a jukebox musical using popular songs from the film’s soundtrack. The music and lyrics are beautifully composed by Bryan Adams and Jim vallance. This is the first musical written by Adams and hopefully not the last.
It is through the music we gain depth and perspective about our Edward and Vivian. The script mainly stays faithful to the film which is comforting and a delight to hear the treasured lines. However, the music tells us more. It gives Vivian a history, an understanding of who she is, and shows us a strong intelligent woman.
We see Edwards vulnerability and growth as he sees that there can be a different world to the one, he was born in, the common ground that brings the couple together. Strictly come dancing star Ore Oduba is a showstopper playing both Happy Man and Mr Thompson. His energy is infectious as he acts as our storyteller and confidant to vulnerable Vivian. Ballroom fans will not be disappointed with the most exquisite and fast based choreography. There is playful humour throughout the show with quick one liners which excites the audience.
The talent which runs through the cast is immense. Rebekah Bryant played Vivian in this performance and her belting range is incredible alongside Natalie Paris vibrant portrayal of Kit with a fierce and powerful voice. Just like the film this is certainly not a family show. The love scenes remain faithful to the film with some very sultry moments.
Pretty woman is a glittering triumph of a show which brings a beloved favourite up to date. Get ready to fall back in love again. Times may change but a love story is never going to fall out of fashion. This is a show which will be watched many times. If not it may be a big mistake, big!
