Quizzes, face painting and a scavenger hunt are just a few of the festivities happening to celebrate Stoke indoor market’s 35th birthday.
The indoor market will be holding an eighties themed birthday bash for the whole family on Saturday, August 17. Stoke Indoor Market’s actual birthday is on Saturday, August 10.
Markets have been held in Stoke for more than two hundred years however, in May 1982 Stoke’s old market went up in flames. A new market was built two years later.
One of the longest serving traders at the market, Jim Doolan from Dolan Pet Supplies said: “My family have been in the market trade for forty four years. I remember when the market opened 35 years ago and I even sprayed my hair silver and wore a dicky bow on the opening day to celebrate. Stoke market is a great place to work, over the years we have built up a loyal customer base and I enjoy having a good rapport with them.”
In recent months the market has seen new stalls open, owner of butchers Market Corner, Emily Robertson said: “Having worked in the market since I was 15, I recently decided to set up my own stall. To celebrate the market turning 35 we will be having a barbecue throughout the day and shoppers will get exclusive offers.”
Councillor Carl Edwards, cabinet member for the environment said: “To be open thirty five years is a brilliant achievement. Markets are an important part of our heritage and our communities. In last few years Stoke market has seen an increase in traders and now has a vast array of stalls for shoppers to choose from – with more exciting stalls in the works. I would encourage anyone who has the time to pop along to the market on to celebrate with the traders and join in the fun.”
Stoke market’s birthday celebrations will be held on Saturday, August 17, 10am to 3pm.
