Community at the heart of Above the Tunnel Cafe
MEMBERS of the community and local businesses came together to help celebrate the opening of a new Stoke-on-Trent cafe.
Owners of Above The Tunnel Cafe – located at Uttoxeter Road, Meir – aim to create not just a place for customers to eat – but to also provide a community hub for the area – and they did just that during a special open day on Friday 18 October.
During the day taster samples from the menu were served, which included breakfast sandwiches and cakes, with many visitors saying they could not wait to return.
Cafe owners Berni Buxton and Andrew Sargent were also raising funds for the Dougie Mac, who have a large shop next door, and representatives from the charity were at the open day along with local councillor Chris Robinson.
Berni Buxton, who is the owner of the cafe along with partner Andrew Sargent, said: “A lot of businesses in the area have popped by to say hello as well as residents – which has been really nice.
“It was also great to welcome Cllr Robinson to our main open day and we thank him for his support. We really want to make Above the Tunnel a place for all to come along to and enjoy not just the food, but the social aspect as well.”
Andrew added: “Community means the world to us and to have had so many people come in to see us already has been amazing – we really appreciate the support.
“Whatever we do we always make sure we make people feel welcome – our place is like a home from home. I have spoken to so many customers who have said they have enjoyed coming in and having something to eat – but also chatting to other people – which is great.”
Representatives of the Dougie Mac were in attendance and donations were placed in the charity’s collection buckets.
Donna Adams, Head of Community Fundraising at Dougie Mac, said: “It’s great to see so many people supporting the opening of the café and demonstrating the great community spirit in the area. We’re really grateful for Andrew and Berni’s support for Dougie Mac and we’re looking forward to helping our new neighbour with his fundraising.”
Councillor Chris Robinson, of the Longton and Meir South ward, said: “When I heard about what Andrew and Berni were doing in the area I wanted to come and support them.
“The work which they are doing is brilliant especially helping to raise funds for the Dougie Mac who have been in the community for many years.
“I think Above The Tunnel Cafe is a brilliant idea and it gives something different to the community. People can come in have a cup of tea, a breakfast or lunch, and have a chat – which is great.”
Arfan Mohammed is the owner of Sizzlers Fast Food, in Abbey Hulton, and was at the open day. He said: “I have known Andrew and Berni from their other business ADS Truck Parking in Longton, and they have been great supporters of mine and the work which I do in the community. We help to take food packages to local residents – for instance elderly people who need necessities – and they have helped with that by donating food items.
“They are very much like me in helping in the community and giving back and I will always support them as they are an amazing couple. We are now looking into ways in which we can do more work with the community and helping in Meir.”
A representative from Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce – where Andrew and Berni are members – was also in attendance as well as Internet Central and Johnathan Smith from nearby CIC Positive People Empowerment.
